Interior design strategies are simple to follow and easy to implement, so there's no reason not to start today.

Here are some of my favorite interior design tips for beginners:

Plan ahead. Before you start decorating, take a few minutes to look around your home, just as if you were going to sell it. If you're planning to sell your home in the next year or two, focus on what will make the most difference in selling. If you're looking for a new place, try listing places with similar homes or characteristics that appeal to potential buyers.

Make a plan and stick with it. When deciding where to put furniture, think about the color scheme; who will be using it; how often and where it will be used; and what mood you want the room or space to have (e.g., formal vs. casual). Decide on a floor plan before you start buying items for each room or space so that you know where everything fits in relation to one another (and vice versa).

Keep it simple (but not boring!). When decorating with only one color palette or style, choose neutrals like black or white; crisp solid colors; soft hues like blues and greens; and neutral transitional pieces like curtains and accessories such as lamps.
